Toxik Ephex

Toxik Ephex was probably the finest Scottish Punk/Folk/Crossover artists of the 80s, this Aberdeen six-piece comprised Dod (vocals), Carmen (fiddle), Fred (guitars), Mikey (bass), Chizel (drums) and Frankie (rhythm guitar). Local favourites for several years before their underground popularity spread throughout the rest of Scotland and England, their endeavours in this direction were helped by support slots to the politically and musically sympathetic New Model Army and Men They Couldn’t Hang. Their vinyl debut had come on the early 80s Crass Records sampler Bullshit Detector 2, after which they created their own delightfully titled Green Vomit Records. From that label came a split album with fellow Scottish political Punk outfit Oi Polloi, then the endearing The Adventures Of Nobby Porthole - The Cock Of The North. Staffed by mad fiddlers, snarling political vocals and diatribes against the Conservative government of the period, it also included an enchanting version of the Scottish Folk standard ‘Bonnie Wee Jeanie McColl’. Alas, the demise of the fondly remembered sextet came in 1991, although Carmen (dubbed by some sections of the press as ‘a female Nigel Kennedy’) reappeared both solo and with ceilidh specialists Old Blind Dogs.
