R.A.S. (France)

R.A.S. is Oi! band from Bois-Colombes / Asnières, France (1982 / 1984). Reformed since 2012. In the French Punk/Oi! landscape, R.A.S. was a meteorite! Less than two years of existence, few concerts, but the band left an indelible trace in many memories. And for good reason! At a time when skinheads were not necessarily synonymous with the extreme right, R.A.S. was formed at the end of 1982 between the towns of Bois-Colombes and Asnières, in the Paris suburbs, in a Skunk spirit, a mix of Punk and Skin culture. The perfect cohabitation between Special Duties and Red Alert! The cover of the single, which quickly hit the shops, embodies this state of mind. And, while the tricolour patches start to bloom on the bombers of many Skins, the band clearly shows its anti-nationalist ideas... carried by a Skinhead on vocals. R.A.S. has always had a taste for paradoxes. With the release of the LP, "84", their audience grew, but it also created a controversy. Several of their lyrics led to endless discussions in the microcosm. Some Punks were suspicious of a band with an increasingly Skinhead look, while the autonomes, politicised thugs from the Paris squats, reproached them for their rejection of communist ideology, and many Skins could not stand their rejection of nationalism. Faced with a growing tendency to claim to be proud of being French while being nostalgic for the Third Reich, we owe it to R.A.S. to have forced the Skinhead movement to make clear choices... no more confusion and contradictions, just one question: fascist or not, full stop! The band paid dearly for it, its concerts becoming the scene of demonstrations of force by a handful of Skins unfurling French flags and Nazi salutes, then base ball bats and tear gas. R.A.S. was nevertheless a group composed of great jokers, not taking themselves too seriously and loving to have fun. But, faced with increasing violence, the band ended up splitting up in the summer of 1984. Of course, the future has shown that the extreme right-wing imprint ended up rubbing off on almost the entire French Skinhead movement from 1984 onwards. But R.A.S. has at least the merit of having underlined contradictions and forced the hypocrites to choose their side.
