SHOUTBOARD

Rough

Rough were Oi!/Street Punk band from Torino, Italy. They are considered, with Bologna-based Nabat, among the first and most important Italian Oi! bands. They formed in 1981 and began by revisiting classic English Punk songs. They were immediately spotted by Giulio Tedeschi, a well-known pioneer of the Italian underground music scene, who in February of the following year produced a 7" EP for Meccano Records known as "Torino E' La Mia Citta'", from the title of one of the four unreleased tracks presented. Their recording debut coincided with their period of greatest fame: reviews in specialised magazines, interviews, concerts. After some line-up changes, the band disbanded in 1984. In the early nineties, the song "Torino E' La Mia Citta'" became very popular in the Basque Country after being reinterpreted by some local bands. Piero Maccarino, the band's first singer, died prematurely in May 1999. Statuto's song "Un Fiore Nel Cemento" is dedicated to him. Drummer Nicola Paparella currently plays in Africa Unite as a percussionist and is better known as Papa Nico.
