Paranoia (DE)
Paranoia was formed in Dresden in 1982 from the group Rotzjungen. The group quickly became the focus of the small Punk scene in Dresden and played concerts throughout the GDR, including at the Erlöserkirche in East Berlin, Karl-Marx-Stadt and Leipzig. In 1983 there was a gig in Budapest. The group maintained contact with the western Punk scene through Punk fanzines and letter contacts.... George Orwell completed his novel "1984" in 1948. An impressive work that sketches the emergence of a totalitarian state in a fascinating and frightening way. Omnipresent, the autocrat "Big Brother" rules through total surveillance, manipulation, disinformation, monopolism of violence & true to his proclamations: War means peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength. In 1984, the exact year in which Orwell projected his then utopian novel plot, the Dresden Punk band Paranoia released their first and only demo tape "Here We Are For Everyone... Who Needs A Kultband". Orwell's novel had long since had an oppressive reflection in the in reality in the GDR of the time. Conditions like those Orwell had described half a century ago were the breeding ground for bands like Namenlos, Schleimkeim or Paranoia, founded in 1983, long before the era of the so-called "other bands". These groups radically translated their message of anger, discontent and hopelessness into rough and unpolished punk music with equally rough lyrics. Unvarnished and uncompromising, they call a spade a spade. Paranoia's short but turbulent band history includes concerts at legendary point meetings, a gig in Budapest and their aforementioned demo tape, which also attracted attention in the West. "Big Brother" was not long in coming. Soon they were fined for performing without a permit and an operational procedure by the Stasi, which resulted in the imprisonment of two band members in 1985, led to the "dismantling of the illegal Punk band Paranoia". Some Paranoia musicians then founded the band Kaltfront, in whose repertoire some Paranoia songs still live on today. The album title "1984" deliberately links the band's biography with Orwell's novel, and unfortunately this makes more sense than ever today.
