The Thing (NYC)

 

THE THING was the ORIGINAL legendary NYC Progressive Punk / Psychedelic Punk / Noise Rock band, the founders of what is now called Stoner Rock. The first and foremost band named THE THING, from NYC and NJ back in the 1980's. Hugely popular for their creative music and wild stage shows. For roughly an eight year period, THE THING slogged around the NY area, playing in dingy clubs and putting out a handful of records that combined a love of Hawkwind and 70's era Space/Psych Rock with a Grungy Noise Rock assault. It's an eccentric sound that sort of resembles the missing link between the high-power Stoner Rock of Monster Magnet and the sleazy, amp-blowing noise skuzz of Lower East Side contemporaries like Pussy Galore, Soul Crusher-era White Zombie, Unsane, and Live Skull. THE THING guitarist Sal Canzonieri,  would later go on to form Electric Frankenstein while still a member of THE THING but as as Electric Frankenstein started to take off Sal  would ultimately end THE THING.
